Kilimanjaro Climbing Routes Guide: Choosing the Best Route to the Summit

Mount Kilimanjaro offers seven well-managed routes for climbers who want to reach its summit. These routes are the Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Mweka, Shira, Rongai, and Umbwe routes. Some of these routes overlap and share the same trails as climbers move higher up the mountain.

In case you accessing the mountain from the eastern side, you can use the Marangu Route. It is the oldest route and one of the easiest ways to climb Kilimanjaro. Because of its long history, it has good infrastructure and facilities for climbers. However, its popularity can sometimes reduce the overall experience. The route is often called the “Coca-Cola Route” because it is the most commonly used. The huts along the trail can become crowded due to the large number of climbers. Some visitors also believe that the scenery on the Marangu Route is less impressive than on other routes on Mount Kilimanjaro.

Machame Route

The Machame Route, also known as the “Whisky Route,” is another popular route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Climbers approach the mountain from the southern side before the trail turns east toward the summit. This route is more challenging than the Marangu Route and usually takes more days to complete. However, it rewards climbers with beautiful views of lush forests and spectacular sights of the mountain’s icy southern slopes.

If you have more time in Tanzania and want a longer trekking experience on Mount Kilimanjaro, the Lemosho Route is one of the best choices. It takes more days than most other routes and is not an easy climb. However, the slower pace, regular rest stops, and better acclimatization give climbers a higher chance of reaching the summit successfully.

The Lemosho Route

Trekking the Lemosho Route – Mount Kilimanjaro

The Lemosho Route is newer and less crowded than many of the other routes, making it a more peaceful and natural experience.
This route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the western side. It offers beautiful views of the mountain from different angles and takes climbers through forests filled with alpine plants. The trail also passes along ridges and near a collapsed volcanic crater. Because of its varied landscapes and stunning scenery, the Lemosho Route is considered one of the most scenic routes on Kilimanjaro.

The Mweka Route

Climbers mostly use the Mweka Route to descend the mountain after reaching the top. It starts on the south side and goes through a beautiful rainforest. Because it is very steep and direct, people rarely use it to climb up. However, it makes for a pleasant, scenic walk down.
The Shira Route: The Shira Route starts on the west side of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is very similar to the Lemosho Route, but it begins higher up on the Shira Plateau. This route gives you amazing views of the mountain, open grasslands, and unique landscapes. Because it starts so high, it can be harder for some climbers to get used to the thin air.

The Rongai Route

The Rongai Route starts on the north side of Kilimanjaro, near the border of Kenya. It is a quiet trail with fewer crowds than the busy southern routes. The path goes through wild, quiet areas where you have a good chance of seeing wildlife. Because it is one of the easier routes, it is great for hikers who want a peaceful, uncrowded hiking trip.

The Umbwe Route

The Umbwe Route is the shortest and steepest path on Mount Kilimanjaro. It starts from the south and is famous for its very difficult, steep terrain. This route is only recommended for experienced hikers because it goes up so fast that your body has less time to get used to the high altitude. While it is a very tough climb, it offers beautiful views and a great adventure for anyone looking for a challenge.
